How to use the Writing Prompt Generator

I designed this page so that you can use it with as little friction as possible. No sign-up, no wait time. All you need to do is use the site's features one by one.

  1. Filters: Set the Type, Genre, and Audience for the writing prompts in the sidebar. Once the Filters are set, simply click "New prompt" to draw a random prompt from the filtered set of writing prompts. Promo Page - Filters Example
  2. New prompt: Choose to generate a new random prompt from within the filter parameters that have been chosen. The same prompt will not be chosen for immediate repeat use (i.e., a pool of more than one prompt will yield a different prompt with immediate repeat use).
  3. Copy prompt: Copy the current prompt to the clipboard. You can then paste it into another document or share it with others in a chat or writing group.
  4. Save: Saves the current prompt to the saved panel below the scratchpad for the duration of your session. These will be deleted when you close or refresh the page, so copy them first.
  5. Daily Prompt: Appears at the top of the tool as the Prompt of the Day for the respective calendar day. This prompt is the same for everyone visiting the tool that day. Thus, it is perfect for writing groups or a classroom's writing warm-up.
  6. 10- minute timer: Start a writing sprint. Pause it, resume it, or press Reset to start over at 10 minutes. The timer turns blue when it's complete. Use with Scratchpad for a self-contained block of time to write, without distractions.
  7. Scratchpad: Write within the browser. Live word count. The Scratchpad is a local entity. It does not get sent to any server. Copy your writing before you leave the page using the "Copy my writing" button.

Types of writing prompts explained

For each of the six prompt types, there is a corresponding type of writing.

How to make the most of a writing prompt

These are the ways by which one can get so much more out of writing prompts than simply reading them. A writing prompt is a door, not a destination.

Frequently asked questions

What types of writing prompts does this generator include?

There are six types of prompts that you can generate with this writing prompt generator. They include story starters, journal prompts, dialogue prompts, first-line prompts, what-if prompts, and poetry prompts. Use the Type filter to list all the writing prompts of a single type.

What is the Prompt of the Day?

The 'Prompt of the Day' is highlighted as the single prompt for the current calendar date and updates automatically at midnight each day. This is ideal for writing groups and/or classrooms that want to give all members the same prompt on a given date, and anyone can access it on that day without an account.

Can I use these prompts in my classroom?

Yes. You can use all prompts on this site for free for educational purposes. You can filter prompts by an Audience of Kids or Teens to ensure the prompts you choose are appropriate for that age group. The Prompt of the Day is designed as a classroom warm-up. The same prompt is available that day to everyone who uses the site, without needing to register for an account.

Does the scratch pad save my writing?

No, the scratchpad is a local text area, which means no writing will be sent to a server or stored anywhere. Your scratchpad text will be lost when you close the browser tab or refresh the page. You can use the "Copy my writing" button to copy your writing to your computer's clipboard and then paste it into a document, note, or whatever you need to.

Where do the prompts come from? Are they AI-generated?

All our prompts are original and are written by human editors. This means that instead of a prompt being generated on the fly by an AI, each prompt is reviewed for quality, for specificity, and for usefulness as a true writing prompt — as opposed to a non-specific abstract topic or a completely vague writing instruction. We update our writing-prompt dataset regularly with new prompts and remove those we deem too generic.
